Originating with a young Soldier, Private Willie Lee Duckworth in 1944, the "Jodies," "Jody calls," or "cadences" as they are often called have become ingrained into military culture. Often taking on an arguably offensive tone, many of these cadences are full of violence, war crimes, and worse. All of this, to harden the minds of young troops who've not experienced the harshness of war. On the less objectionable side, there are branch-specific cadences used to prop up the organization, unit, school, etc. C-130 is one such example, telling a first-person story from the perspective of a paratrooper. The "Airborne Ranger" lives in Army tradition as the man's man. This is the guy we sing about, who always seems to save the day. Mama Told Johnny | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) The United States Military has a respected tradition of marching to call-and-response songs, known as cadences or Jodies, led by a troop leader, Drill Sergeant/Instructor, etc. Originating with PVT Willie Lee Duckworth in World War II, this practice is essential in bootcamps, leadership schools, and physical training. With tempos of 120 BPM for marches and 180 BPM for runs, cadences provide a steady rhythm that fosters unit cohesion, boosts morale and helps troops stay in sync while managing their breathing. Throughout the years, cadences have evolved to incorporate a more striking and, at times, provocative tone. The intense nature of some cadences serves to mentally prepare new recruits for the challenges they will face in their duties and potentially in combat. The cadence "Mama Told Johnny" focuses on the story of Johnny, who enlisted against his mother's will, ultimately leaving his wife and son a Gold Star family. And that’s the re... I Left My Home | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) The US Military has a long-standing, respected tradition of marching in cadence, aka: with call-and-response "Jody calls." Through all branches of the military, this staple of training is known to keep troops "in step," or marching/running perfectly in sync. In addition, it is common knowledge: there is nothing more motivating on a long ruck or run, than the voice of a soulful NCO (non-commissioned officer) calling a Jodie. "I Left My Home" has gone viral more than once - First catching the attention of the civilian world in 2021, when Drill Sergeant DePalo was filmed marching a basic training platoon to the cadence. Funny enough, this all happened while I was still in Basic Training - It was a strange feeling, coming home to my civilian family who evidently learned the same new song I did. Some of my now good friends, MJ Hanks, The Marine Rapper, and Topher also remixed the cadence, topping the Billboard charts and making history. Once I saw what recorded cadence did both for the veteran community and the "outside world," I made it a mission to record them. My studio recording of this cadence has gone insanely viral, with hundreds of millions of views across social media. A fellow Soldier, Chelse Hill and I even teamed up to make a rock remix in honor of one of our fallen. That song has garnered millions of views/streams and has made our hero's name, SFC Ricardo Young, well known for his bravery and sacrifice. Since all this craziness, all the recorded cadences have served as a source of motivation, and a reminder of the "good old days" to many veterans, and I'm thankful to have been able to provide this resource. Military schools are now pointing people in the direction of my albums to learn cadences, and through the social media side of things, we have been able to, as a community, use my platform to raise funds for various veteran-focused nonprofits. I can't thank you enough! All that being said, here are the lyrics to "I Left My Home" (Army Cadence): Lyrics Lyrics Your daddy was home when you left Your momma was home when you left Your sister was home when you left Your brother was home when you left The dog was home when you left The cat was home when you left The fish was home when you left Your daddy, your momma, your sister, your brother The dog, the cat, the fish was home when you left And that’s the reason you left I left my home To join the army I left my home (I left my home) To join the army (to join the army) Related Products New Cadence Merch Quick View “I Left My Home" - Soft Blend Cotton T-Shirt - JMF Regular Price $34.99 Sale Price $29.99 Signed Copies Quick View Cadences Vol. 1, 2, 3, & 4 Bundle (CDs) - AUTOGRAPHED Regular Price $64.99 Sale Price $59.99 The day I left (the day I left) My momma cried She thought that I Would surely die I left my wife Standing at the door She knew that I Would die at war I left my son Playing in the yard Seeing Daddy leave Made him cry so hard The day I left I shook my daddy’s hand He said that I Had become a man OO-WEE, OO-WEE OO-WEE, OO-WEE OO-WEE, OO-WEE To join the army Listen to this cadence: Song Name: I Left My Home Album Name: Cadences Volume 1 by Jonathan Michael Fleming DISCLAIMERS: The lyrics and music to the above cadence are not original to me. - Down By The River- Cadence Lyrics | Jonathan Michael Fleming
Down by the river We took a little walk Ran into the enemy Had a little talk Down By The River | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) Call-and-response cadences, known as "Jodies," play a vital role in the U.S. Military, providing a steady rhythm to keep troops in sync, boost morale, and reinforce unity during marches and runs. These cadences hold a rich and significant place in military tradition . Down by the River is a traditional military cadence which plays on the age-old tradition of crap-talk. These lyrics describe a fictional encounter where Soldiers confront an enemy by the river resulting in a stand-off. This fight ends with the enemy being thrown into the river. The word “enemy” has often been swapped for words like “commie,” “China,” or even the names of competing Platoons or branches, all for the purpose of building comradery and fueling Soldiers’ competitive spirits. Lyrics Down by the river We took a little walk Ran into the enemy Had a little talk We didn’t like their attitude Didn’t like the way they walk So we pushed ‘em (Hey!), we kicked ‘em (Hey!) We threw ‘em in the river (We pushed ‘em, we kicked ‘em, we threw ‘em in the river) Laughed as they drowned We don’t need no enemies Hangin’, hangin’, hangin’ around (Hey, don’t be a fool) (Sombody said we were #2) (They lied!) - Blood Upon The Risers - Military Cadence Lyrics | Jonathan Michael Fleming
He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright He packed up his equipment and made sure his pack was tight He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar And he ain’t gonna jump no more Blood Upon The Risers | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) Since WWII, the U.S. Military has used cadences - Drill Sergeant-led call-and-response songs that coordinate troops' movements at 120 BPM for marching and 180 BPM for running. A darkly humorous ballad that recounts a paratrooper’s tragic jump gone wrong. With vivid imagery and dramatic verses, it highlights the dangers of airborne training. Its blend of humor and tragedy makes it a memorable and cautionary tale. Lyrics He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright He packed up his equipment and made sure his pack was tight He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar And he ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) “Is everybody happy?” cried the Sergeant looking up Our hero answered bravely, “yes!” and then they stood him up He leaped right out into the blast, his static line unhooked He ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock He felt the wind, he felt that clouds, he felt the awful drop He jerked his cord, the silk spilt out and wrapped around his legs And he ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors cracked his dome The lines were snarled and tied in knots around his skinny bones The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground He ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild The medics jumped and screamed with glee, they rolled their sleeves and smiled For it had been a week or more since last a chute had failed He ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) He hit the ground, the sound was splat, his blood went spurting high His comrades were then heard to say, “a hell of a way to die!” He lay there rolling ‘round in the welter of his gore He ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the chute Intestines were a-danglin’ from his paratrooper’s suit They picked him up, still in the suit, and poured him from his boots And he ain’t gonna jump no more (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! Gory, gory what a hell of a way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!) DISCLAIMERS: The lyrics and music to the above cadence are not original to me. - Everywhere I Go - Cadence Lyrics (Army) | Jonathan Michael Fleming
Everywhere I go There’s a dang private there ( There’s a drill sergeant there) Everywhere I go There’s a dang private there (There’s a drill sergeant there) Dang private (Drill Sergeant) Dang Private (Drill Sergeant) Why don’t you leave me alone? Why don’t you take yourself home? When I go to chow There’s a dang private there (There’s a drill sergeant there)... Everywhere I Go | Military Cadence (Lyrics & History) (Skip to lyrics) The US Military has a time-honored and highly respected tradition of marching in cadence, also known as call-and-response "Jody calls." This essential tradition, dating back to world-war two is used across all branches of the military to ensure troops march and run in perfect sync, or "in step." It's basically indisputable: nothing is more motivating on a long ruck or run than the soulful voice of a non-commissioned officer calling a Jodie. "Everywhere I Go" is traditionally a basic-training cadence. It documents the period of time where a Soldier-to-be can't do anything without a Drill Sergeant looking over their back. The cadence is humorous, and is about the only time trainees get to talk crap back to the DS. Take a listen...
